WSL: Tyler edges closer to a world title while the men get through round one
It may have taken two days but we finally got through the opening rounds.

After a bizarre opening day where the event was called off after just two heats, the Quiksilver Pro France finally got through it’s opening round of competition last night.

The waves were solid (about 4 to 6 foot) but a little on the unstable side, with a big tide causing difficulties and a few upsets in the men’s event.

Trestles champion Jordy Smith suffered an early setback when he struggled in his round one heat, losing to Kai Otton, while Brazilian’s Italo Ferreira and Ciao Ibelli both cruised to round three.

Rankings leaders John John Florence and Gabriel Medina also progressed in their opening heats, with JJF showing no signs of struggle from the knee industry suffered in Tahiti last month.

Meanwhile in the women’s, Tyler Wright looks set to take her maiden world title after dominating in her opening heat, while Courtney Conlogue – the only competitor with a mathematical chance of taking the crown from Tyler – struggled in her heat and will now face a round two elimination to keep her contest and world title hopes alive.

“Waves like this allow you a lot of freedom because there’s not just one spot and one particular wave that you have to be looking for and I really enjoy that,” Wright said.

“With that in mind I do have a gameplan in play as well. I’ve been in this position before and it was fun but even without wanting in there was more pressure on me, but now I feel so free. It feels like a very balanced lifestyle for me right now — I love France and I love what I’m doing.”
